One of the area’s main attractions is the Otago Central Rail Trail, the old railway line that took 42 years to build and which was once a lifeline to the economy the region. Now only a small stretch remains, between Dunedin and Middlemarch, as road travel became more economic and the line was slowly dismantled throughout the 1980s and 1990s.  The remainder has been transformed in to a 150-kilometre long walking and cycling track that cuts through the tussock covered hills, over original trestle bridges and, rather conveniently, past several remote country pubs! It is a beautiful route through the unique Otago landscape with opportunity to stop and have a look around several historic towns along the way.

It is possible to organise bike rental in advance along with transfers to/from the start/end point, panniers and a lunch pack, which, along with water and a camera, are all you need for the day. You have the option to ride a full 55 kilometres but if you feel this is a little too far then transport can be arranged from an earlier pick-up point. If you are interested in undertaking the full five days you can also do this independently but guiding options are available.
