Lake Mapourika is about ten minutes north of Franz Josef, on the edge of the Okarito conservation area. It is framed by the Southern Alps and fringed with ancient rainforest full of native birdlife. This two-hour cruise is an education on the ecology of the area and the boat is equipped with a small platform at the front to better view the birds. The reflections in the calm water often create magical photo opportunities and on a clear day it’s possible to see up to the glaciers. It is also possible to combine the cruise with a guided rainforest walk for a more in depth look at the flora and fauna of the area.
