New Zealand’s distance from any other landmass has left it blessed with some unique wildlife, primarily of the avian variety. The birdlife here is wonderful, from several flightless species, including the country’s namesake Kiwi, to bold Keas, long-legged Pukekos, and delightfully tuneful bellbirds.  There aren’t any large land mammals in New Zealand but this is more than made up for by those living in the ocean, with a resident population of sperm whales and seasonal Orca on the east coast and playful dolphins also seen in a number of places. Those that bridge land and sea – seals and penguins – are also common around the South Island so if you travel from top to bottom you are sure to experience a wonderful selection of wildlife along the way.
